If you really want him back, you have to act like you are not desperate, even if you are. Sometimes that can can be quite difficult if you really want someone back.
The Dont's
The first thing you should not do is over text. I don't know if you are, but it can be annoying to the guy if you send, ';I love/miss you,'; texts every day. Delete his number if possible. You can always write it down and then put it somewhere really inconvenient, like bury it, so you can't just have his number whenever you get the impulse to text or call.
Also, don't ever drunk dial him either! That never goes good.
The Do's
It is okay to send 1 email that says how you feel, but then you have to leave at that if he does not respond...It can be really hard not to send a follow up email. Your email should not be you saying how you need him or how he is the only one for you. He could get scared off. Just tell him how you feel and tell him to call you when he is ready to talk.
After that it is a waiting game. If he doesn't contact you, I am afraid you may be out of luck...
';Last Hope'; Strategies (If all else fails)
Wait at least 1 month with no contact and no response to email.
If everything else fails, you could always try a ';last hope'; tactic. Try making a mixed CD with all the songs you guys would listen to or that remind you of him. Give it as a gift with little descriptions for each song of why it reminds you of him.
Another ';last hope'; tactic is similar. Make a little photo album. Take pictures all over the city of places you guys went together. Under each picture put a description. Try to remind him of all the fun you had together.
Another ';last hope'; tactic is similar, but it involves you compiling all the little mementos you might have kept from the relationship. Give those to him to show him that you kept all that stuff. It could be like a movie stub or a receipt from a restaurant. Just anything you may have kept. Again, the descriptions with each thing.

My partner of 8 years split up with me last month and i am so heartbroken its unbelievable. it was out of the blue.
The best thing you can do is TRY and get on with life and blank him out for now. I have realised over the last month that the more i chase him, call him and text him, the further away he runs.
I think once they can see that you are not chasing them anymore, they will either take that as a mutual agreement or come back to you. and only time will tell what will happen.
Sometimes when you lose the person you love it can make you realise just how much you miss someone, and this break up will tell him what he really wants.
Just give him time, dont chase after him because you will push him away even more... iv learnt this over the last month and he is being fine with me now i am hoping after some time apart we can get back together.

Why did you break up with him in the first place? Wait, let me guess, you found someone who you thought was better huh. You know, I've been in his shoes, let him be and let him live his life with out you. You had your chance and you blew it plus you hurt him in the process. So while you were out with your new boyfriend having the time of your life, he was at home with a broken heart wondering what he did wrong. That sucks.
Let him find someone who wont throw him away the next time you think youve found someone better
Don't waste your time. Why do you want back someone who rejected you in the first place?
Find new friends
Find a hobby
Find things to do
Write a list of all his annoying flaws and remind yourself you deserve better.
DO NOT have sex with him - no matter what
Move on and live life to its fullest.
